Text messaging is private. You don't have to worry about snoops trying to listen to your cell phone conversations. You do, however, need to make sure nobody is looking over your shoulder.
Many people like to send a quick text message because it takes less time than a phone call or an e-mail. You can get messages as you run errands and you're not tied to your computer the way you are for e-mailing and instant messaging. People who are hearing-impaired really appreciate the convenience of texting. It's also great to be able to look over a message before you reply, something impossible to do when you're conversing on a phone call.
