Mass extinctions, unlike the extinctions of single or even several species, involve near devastating levels of species extinctions that could trigger the end of life on Earth altogether. Thus far, the fossil record has turned up five such events, and many scientists think we're in the midst of the sixth. How it will stack up against other mass extinctions is still a matter of debate, although the fact that we play a major hand in this particular event is largely agreed upon.
