Beginning in classical Greece, the four humors were used to account for personality differences among individuals. The four humors were substances produced by the body, phlegm, yellow bile, black bile and blood. Too much or too little of one humor led to an imbalance that was characterized by personality traits. Too much black bile, for example, led one to be melancholic.
