  1. It's a phone running on a 4G network protocol such as LTE. Cell phone technology can be confusing -- the technology is classified by generation, but there's more than one standard in each generation to date. The two technologies currently dominating the U.S. cell phone market are CDMA and GSM. These protocols aren't compatible -- a CDMA phone won't work on a GSM network without a special receiver. LTE is an example of fourth-generation cell phone technology that uses a completely different method of communication than earlier standards. It's possible to have a 3G device that gets faster download rates than a similar 4G device.
