  1. A "burqini" is a garment similar to a burqa. A burqa is a full-body covering worn by conservative Muslim women to obscure everything from sight except the eyes, which are often covered with a mesh screen. A burqini is a version of the burqa that allows women to swim and participate in other summer activities while maintaining their beliefs concerning a woman's modesty and dress. Some Muslims consider a burqini to be offensive, but burqinis have spread in popularity for burn victims, cancer patients and even some conservative Christians [source: Fitzpatrick].
