Waste products from human activity and industry pollute the air. Through the years, many parts of the United States and other areas have seen huge increases in exhaust from automobiles and other vehicles. Smog, a highly visible form of air pollution, exists in many cities. Air pollution is thought to cause several health problems, including allergies, cardiovascular disease, lung cancer, emphysema, bronchitis and asthma. It is also believed to damage plants. Carbon dioxide and smoke, in particular, may have long-term effects on our climate.
