  1. Less precise than a mercury barometer but more durable and portable, an aneroid barometer shows small changes in air pressure. The device has a cylinder with a flexible top -- some air is removed from the cylinder, and the top flexes with changes in air pressure. These movements are transmitted to a pointer that records the movements on a graduated scale. Aneroid barometers are commonly used for aircraft altimeters, but they have to be adjusted to account for differences in air pressure caused by weather.
