  1. Eating a diet restricted in calories has been shown to lengthen the lives of mice, yeast cells, monkeys and dogs, to name just a few of the creatures who have been studied. While there's been no formal study of calorie restriction's benefits to humans, anecdotal evidence suggests that during times of famine and war, when people had less food, they lived longer and developed fewer aging-related diseases (such as diabetes and cancer). Calorie restriction isn't just cutting back on fries and soda, though -- the diet requires cutting calorie intake by 30 percent while still consuming all necessary nutrients. Since the diet can be difficult for humans to maintain, scientists are trying to figure out if the results can be duplicated with an anti-aging pill. The problem? They don't know exactly how calorie restriction extends life. Is it because of the diet's effects on genes? Hormones? Free radicals? That's still a mystery.
