It's a concept made popular in science fiction and thought experiments. If a machine could achieve both intelligence and self-awareness, it might be able to design an even more powerful machine. This machine could design its own successor. Each generation of machines would be more powerful and intelligent than the last, and the length of time between generations would decrease. In such a scenario, these machines might not consider humans to be necessary or beneficial. The next thing you know, we're all on the run from intelligent killing machines resembling a certain California governors.
