It's as scary as a horror movie, especially if it happens to you. A zombie computer is one that has been taken over by a hacker, often without the owner's knowledge. These hackers -- known as crackers -- then use that computer to conduct illegal activities, such as sending out spam or attacking Web pages.
Crackers can even take over several computers at once and connect them, creating a network of zombie computers known as a botnet. One cracker managed to create a network so large that it included 1.5 million different zombie computers [source: TechWeb].
