Stability is an important factor. Communities with a history of family instability often experience more acts of violence than similarly-sized communities that have more stable family structures. Political instability can also lead to violent encounters. Even within a stable environment, people may succumb to aggressive thoughts and act out their violent fantasies. Mental disorders and brain damage can also contribute to a person's violent behavior, affecting judgment and limiting inhibitions.
