The Donner Party is a notorious part of American history and a famous example of survival cannibalism. The group was part of an expedition of settlers venturing from the Iowa territory to California in 1846. A group of settlers -- the Donner Party -- broke away from the main caravan to take a shortcut through the Sierra Nevada Mountains, but they were stranded when they encountered harsh winter weather. Their food and animal supplies were soon depleted and they were reportedly forced into cannibalism for survival. Recent archaeological research into the incident, however, has cast doubt on the veracity of these events. Excavations at the campsite where the cannibalism was reported to have occurred have not turned up any evidence that this story of survival cannibalism actually happened [source: University of Oregon ].
