  1. When plastic hit the scene in the second half of the 19th century, it gradually surpassed ivory, wood, glass and tin as a prime manufacturing material. But if you're looking for the next big thing to come along and bump plastics out of the picture, you're probably out of luck. Most experts agree that plastic, like it or not, is here for the long haul. Luckily, however, there's plenty of room for it to evolve. Bioplastics use polymers from organic sources such as corn instead of oil. As the technology improves, they will likely play an increasing role in manufacturing.
