China has produced countless defective or dangerous products that have had to be recalled in countries like the United States. A Canadian study showed that 95 percent of product recalls from 1988 to 2007 were for Chinese-made products [source: NY Times]. In 2007, more than 20 million children's toys were recalled, some of which were found to contain lead paint, which is known to cause kidney failure and brain damage. That year, Chinese-made toothpaste, toys, dog food, baby bibs, tires and laptop batteries were also pulled from shelves for being defective or dangerous.
In 1962, the United States outlawed the use of lead paint in children's toys and products, apartments, houses and hospitals [source: Washington Post]. In China, at least 10 percent of children suffer from poisoning due to lead in paint, food and water. Government regulation is challenging because there are more than 1 billion people living there. There also are thousands of manufacturers in China, making it very hard for the government to regulate manufacturing closely. Manufacturers often look for ways to cut corners on costs by using cheap materials like lead paint instead of safer alternatives [source: NY Times].
