  1. Early in its development, Egypt solidified two separate monarchies. About 3100 B.C., a king named either Menes or Narmer of Upper Egypt conquered Lower Egypt and united the Two Lands. No matter the name, he is credited as being the founder of Dynasty I, establishing Memphis as the capital city of the newly united country. The new king became known as the pharaoh - a tradition that continued until modern times. An embodiment of the god Horus, the pharaoh was all-powerful and had jurisdiction over all state matters.
