  1. The Industrial Revolution and research into electricity changed welding as electrodes and electric arcs were discovered in the mid-19th century. Those discoveries and inventions were crucial to the advancement of welding. By the last years of the century, many modern welding methods were in place, but not all. Welds would oxidize -- a process where metals bond with oxygen particles in the air. Joints were too brittle to withstand great stress. This became dangerous, such as when boilers with weak seams exploded, resulting in hundreds of deaths.
