In the late fifth century B.C., the Athenian army sent a messenger, Phidippides, to run from their base at Marathon to Sparta. The journey took him approximately one and a half days. On behalf of the Athenians, he asked for the Spartans' help in battling the Persians, but they refused. A day and a half later, he returned to Marathon.
