  1. Plato was a Greek writer and noted thinker who is considered one of the chief architects of what became the study of philosophy. Plato's writings, including his "Republic," are ranked with some of the world's greatest works. Plato masterfully combined content and style. He was born into an influential Athenian family and would become one of the pupils of another famous Greek philosopher, Socrates. Following Socrates' forced suicide, Plato left Greece and traveled extensively. Upon his return to Athens, Plato started his own school - the Academy - which was essentially the first university in history. Aristotle was the most famous person known to have attended Plato's school.
