How were the first Muppets made?

  1. Jim Henson made the first Muppets himself. The original Kermit the Frog looked a little more like a lizard than a frog; he was made with a cardboard frame that was covered with the material from a fuzzy green coat. His eyes were made from the two halves of a round Wacky Stax toy cut down the middle. Some other original Muppets were made of hard materials like papier-mâché, but Henson eventually decided that soft materials would allow Muppeteers (Muppet puppeteers) to make the Muppets more emotive. When building all the Muppets himself became too daunting a task, Henson hired a team of designers and builders (Don Sahlin was the first) to help him construct his Muppets, though Henson continued to sketch most of the designs himself.
