  1. Although he didn't dress in a black ninja outfit or call himself a ninja, Prince Yamato is often referred to as the first ninja because he used deception - - a common ninja tactic - - to fight his foes. According to this Japanese legend, Yamato disguised himself as a woman to kill two rebels against his father, the king. Yet another ancient Japanese ninja story is about a 13-year-old boy named Kumawaka whose dying father was being held prisoner by a monk. The monk refused to let Kumawaka see his father before he died, and the boy decided to take revenge. He pretended he was sick in order to be taken into the monk's house. At night, he would sneak around the house to see where everyone slept, and one night he took the monk's sword and murdered him while he slept.
