  1. Most hybrids run completely on electric power at lower speeds. At those speeds, hybrids are virtually silent, which poses a danger to pedestrians, who may not hear the approaching vehicle. To address this problem, Lotus Engineering developed the Safe & Sound system, which alerts pedestrians to the presence of hybrid cars. The system does this by simulating the sounds a gas-powered car engine makes, adjusting the sounds to the speed of the car. A loudspeaker next to the radiator emits the artificial engine noises. In gas-electric hybrids, the Safe & Sound system won't generate engine the sounds when the gas engine is in use.
