Among paleontologists, the Corythosaurus ("Corinthian helmet reptile") is one of the best-known dinosaurs. One of the reasons for its popularity is its abundance, as many of its skeletons have been found, ranging from young ones to 33-foot-tall (10-meter) adults. The most distinctive feature of the duck-billed Corythosaurus was a hollow crest on top of its head, which developed only in mature adults. When the dinosaur breathed, air went into the nostrils, then entered the chambers of the crest, the throat, the trachea and the lungs. In addition, scientists believe that the crest could have made low, trumpeting sounds the Corythosaurus used to communicate with others of its species.
