It's the scale of molecules. While atoms are smaller than a nanometer -- the average atom is around one-tenth a nanometer in diameter -- we measure molecules on the nanoscale. Since molecules form the basis of matter, it's important to understand how materials behave at this scale. As it turns out, some elements exhibit unusual properties when reduced to the nanoscale. Elements that aren't normally conductive may become conductors if reduced to nanoparticles. Other elements that we consider harmless may become toxic on the nanoscale.
