Whether or not Muslim women should wear veils has been a controversial subject in the West at least since the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in 2001. The Afghani leadership at the time, the Taliban, forced women to wear burqas -- full-body garments covering everything except the eyes -- under the threat of severe punishment. Many Westerners came to associate veils of all kinds with this type of oppression. Many Muslims contend, however, that wearing a veil is symbolic of piety and modesty, and they consider it an issue of religious freedom [sources: Vincent, Clark-Flory]. Some women even claim that veils allow them to achieve a higher level of equality in their male-dominated societies.
